Minding the Gap to improve the odds.

The Inside Straight is a ten-part video and audio podcast series for people working in the messy middle, where strategy, leadership, communications, design, digital builds, storytelling, technology, and business objectives collide.

The show focuses on what happens before a brief is written and after a meeting ends. These are the moments when decisions are shaped, misunderstood, avoided, or left unresolved. They rarely appear in slide decks or case studies, yet they are where risk accumulates, and outcomes are decided.

The name Inside Straight comes from poker. An inside straight is a hand with four of the five cards needed to win, missing one in the middle. That missing card dramatically lowers the odds, even when everything else looks right.

Organizations fail the same way. They often have capable people, activity, and momentum, but miss something essential in leadership, trust, resourcing, or execution.

Inside Straight is built on a simple truth: You can only play the hand you are dealt. The goal is not perfection. The goal is to improve the odds.

Every episode explores a real situation where something essential was missing. Not to assign blame, but to understand what outcome becomes possible when that gap is finally named.

This podcast is the conversation after the meeting, when the deck is closed, the laptops are off, and people with lived experience finally say the quiet parts out loud.

Why the Inside Straight?

The power of Inside Straight is that it’s easier to understand. Something is missing in the middle; the messy middle. So it maps well to all the areas we can address, such branding, communications, governance, risk, strategy, builds, storytelling, etc. Doing it this way keeps the show tight, repeatable across episodes, less editing and keeps the diagnostic positioning.

What we mean by ‘messy middle’

The messy middle is the space between leadership intent and public outcome, where communications teams inherit decisions they didn’t shape, authority and resources don’t always align, and what isn’t named quietly shapes what happens next.
